“I live and work close to the land, exploring the magic in nature’s design. Through my work, I aim to uncover the interconnected relationships within our environment and where our human culture fits into this unfolding narrative. My sculptures are moments of understanding expressed in a maker’s dance with a material, and with luck a unique perspective of our place within this world is discovered.”

— Aaron Loveitt

Born in 1979, I come from the rolling mountains of Vermont State and gained an early reverence for the natural environment.  After receiving a BFA from Alfred University in New York State I traveled to the Pacific Northwest, where I have remained, in constant awe of this remarkable landscape.  In 2005 I started Altility Art Studio in Portland, OR, later relocating to Bellingham, WA in 2010.  In 2018 I built my forever shop, gallery and home on a forested mountainside above the Salish Sea in Bow, WA.  Renamed Canopy Art & Iron, I continue to create site-specific sculpture and ironwork for private commissions, gallery and public art venues. Canopy Gallery showcases seasonal exhibits and experimental projects from contemporary regional artists.  Through my studio and my practice as an artist, I work to span the realm of functional ironwork, conceptual sculpture and creative community events.

Time outside the shop is often immersed in adventure somewhere between the salt water of the Salish Sea and high alpine peaks of the North Cascades.  Often times my exploration stays within the forested watershed where I live, uncovering the recent and long ago history of this particular place.  These experiences help inform the perspectives and understanding that feed my concepts and artistic inspiration.  In turn, each project I create is a unique exploration itself into the unlimited craft of metalwork and the alchemy that unfolds between artisan, tool and material.  Through this path, my work aims to strike a balance between experience, technique and purpose.
